Young Carers
Neston Primary School works closely with Cheshire Young Carers, they have been into school to speak to children in an assembly and they have supported the teachers with a training session.
What is a Young Carer?
A young carer is a young person who cares for a family member who suffers with a physical disability, poor ill health, learning disability, mental health, or substance and alcohol misuse.
What do Young Carers do?
Young Carers take on a number of tasks for the person they care for.
- Practical tasks, such as cleaning, cooking, shopping, general upkeep of the housework.
- Personal care, such as helping with toileting, washing, showering/bathing, and getting dressed.
- Emotional support, such as listening and being someone to offload to.
- Administering or helping someone to remember to take their medication.
- Financial support, such as paying bills, helping manage money ect.
- Sibling Care
- Communication support such as sign language, interpreting letters.
Cheshire Young Carers is a charity dedicated to identifying and supporting children and young people who help care for a family member. They work closely with schools across Cheshire, including Neston Primary School, to ensure that young carers are recognised and receive the support they need to thrive both academically and personally. They offer various forms of assistance, from one-to-one support to group activities and respite opportunities.
How to Make a Referral to Cheshire Young Carers
If you are a family member, or if you know a child or young person at Neston Primary School who you believe is a young carer and could benefit from their support, making a referral is a straightforward process. We encourage you to reach out so they can assess their needs and offer appropriate assistance.

Assessment Process: Once they receive your referral, a member of their team will get in touch with school to arrange an education assessment. This is a chance for them to learn more about the young person's unique circumstances and for them to understand how Cheshire Young Carers can help. This assessment is always conducted sensitively and with the young person's well-being at its heart.
